Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon Sinuplasty

SINUS DILATION

Balloon Sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and infection of the sinuses. It is a relatively new technique that has gained popularity in recent years as an alternative to traditional sinus surgery.

Purpose

Millions of adults and children suffer from sinusitis – an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses that can prevent your sinuses from draining. Balloon sinus dilation can provide relief that lasts for those suffering from sinusitis symptoms. Read more about sinusitis here

The purpose of balloon sinuplasty is to open and clear blocked or narrowed sinus passages, providing relief from chronic sinusitis and improving sinus drainage

Procedure

Balloon sinus dilation offers a safeconvenient, and comfortable alternative for treating persistent sinusitis. After your physician numbs the tissue under local anesthesia, a small balloon is gently inserted into your sinus. By dilating, the balloon slowly reshapes the sinus pathway to restore drainage and normal function. After 3 to 5 seconds, the balloon is removed, allowing for fewer infections and clearer breathing.

Benefits

Balloon sinuplasty offers several advantages compared to traditional sinus surgery:

  • Minimally Invasive. This procedure involves less trauma to surrounding tissues, resulting in less bleeding, reduced pain, and a shorter recovery time.

  • Quick Recovery. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a day or two, compared to a longer recovery period associated with traditional surgery.

  • Preservation of Sinus Anatomy. Unlike traditional surgery, which may involve cutting and removing bone and tissue, balloon sinuplasty preserves the natural sinus structure.

  • Effective Symptom Relief. Balloon sinuplasty can provide significant relief from symptoms of chronic sinusitis, such as congestion, facial pain, and sinus pressure.

  • Reduced Risk of Scarring. The minimal tissue disruption associated with balloon sinuplasty reduces the risk of scarring, which can lead to recurrent blockages.

Patient Recovery

It takes 5.0 days on average to return to local activity after traditional sinus surgery versus 1.7 days on average with in-office balloon sinus dilation. Many patients return to normal activity on the day of the procedure.
